Maureen Visage

Maureen Visage is a South African ceramic and bronze artist, based in Cape Town. Her work is hand built and therefore each piece is unique and made with love.

After qualifying as an actuary in 1998, and working in London, Maureen returned to South Africa in 2000, and joined the studio of Louise Gelderblom. Maureen is a self taught sculptor and this was a part time endeavour for 11 years, during which she took part in various group exhibitions including Art B gallery and the Irma Stern museum. In 2011, after some years of working as an actuary, and lecturing Actuarial Science at the University of Cape Town, creating ceramic works became her only focus.

Maureen mainly creates figurative sculptures (figurines reminiscent of the European porcelain figurines made popular in the 1700’s). Inspired by fairy-tales, various religions, and spiritual and mythical themes, she adds a quirky African twist to create work that is fun, beautiful to hold and honours her European and African roots.

“My work is all about love and fun and making the viewer feel good. There’s enough negativity out there”
Her main focus is figurative pieces but she also has fun with vases, plates and tiles. She currently works at the Barbara Jackson Ceramic Studio in Green Point, Cape Town.
